EDITORIAL

Dear Readers,

other issues fade into the background in the face of the terrible images of the war and the horrors in Ukraine which reach us every day. As a networked logistics company, we feel a particularly strong bond, both in terms of our work and also on a personal level, with the people in Ukraine. Their suffering touches us deeply. We take a clear stand against this war and fully endorse all the sanctions associated with it, and those we have imposed ourselves.

Moving on to address other issues is not possible at this juncture. The white space below symbolises the secondary importance of all other news about business.

In this current special issue, we give you an exclusive insight into our new trimodal, fully covered steel hub in Duisburg. In view of COVID-19, we have refrained from an opening event. In the pages which follow let us take you on a journey into this state-of-the-art new building in which we have invested €12 million, together with the Felbermayr Group.

Against the backdrop of the new possibilities this temperature-controlled and fully roofed terminal gives us, we cannot wait to promote development of steel logistics together with our partners and to tap the potential. Our path has been laid out before us: Our intention is to cover entire supply chains with assets, meaning the portfolio between the seaport and the hinterland, with all modes of transport from one source.

The steel logistics hub in Duisburg, with its gigantic landscape of the steel processing industry right on its doorstep, is a key component in this undertaking. We have contributed to a solution which is capable of mitigating or even cushioning the current disruptions in supply chains. The result is a growing demand for hub concepts, with combination possibilities, interim storage and just-in-time delivery in our shippers.

Another dominant topic in the industry is the production of green steel, an aspiration which explicitly encompasses the supply chain. With our trimodal concept, we are proud to be making a contribution to sustainable transport by harnessing barges and rail. In addition, we will be using our new air/heat pumps which are fully powered by green electricity. Further steps to achieve carbon neutrality in operating the terminal on the Stahlinsel are at the planning stage.

My wish for all of us in the near future is that, in these times of great unrest, we can find a way back to the new normal. No video conference or virtual event, be it ever so well organised, can substitute personal contact with our customers, partners and employees.

Kind regards, Heiko Brückner
