Exports of German spruce are on the rise. The sad cause is the bark beetle. It destroys entire spruce forests. Good professional logistics and transport concepts are needed when forests are infested.
To slowdown the spread of the beetle, the trees must be felled and removed from the forest quickly. Precise logistics play an important role in this. Accordingly, these transports have increased in the Intermodal Division of Haeger & Schmidt Logistik (HSL).
HSL makes an important contribution to the complex logistics chain with its intermodal container pretransport, whereby the loading of the containers takes place in the forests and the transport is secured by its own local transport truck fleet. This enables forestry operations to work faster and curb the spread of the bark beetle.
Depending on the condition of the wood, up to 35 logs can be loaded per container. HSL also takes care of inland waterway transport to the ARA ports. Currently, about 2,000 log containers are moved within the HSL network every month, ready for worldwide shipment. Overall, about 90 percent of all German spruce is destined for the Chinese market, mainly for the furniture and construction industries.
