HSL - DIVISION INLAND NAVIGATION

The Inland Navigation Division at Haeger & Schmidt Logistics (HSL) has the ambition not only to handle pure inland waterway transport, but also to cover the entire transport chain. In 2020, there were numerous major projects in which the division was able to demonstrate this ability: Three of these orders with different types of cargo are presented here as examples.

  1. Blast furnace slag: In cooperation with HSW Logistics, the Inland Navigation division transported 20,000 tonnes of blast furnace slag from the Mediterranean to the Moselle for a cement manufacturer. In Rotterdam, the cargo was loaded from a seagoing vessel into nine inland vessels.
  2. Pig iron: 10,000 t of pig iron were transported from Germany including pre-carriage, on-carriage and intermediate storage to Turkey. Four HSL inland vessels were used as well as a chartered seagoing vessel into which the cargo was directly transferred.
  3. Timber: A total of 13 inland vessels were used to transport 26,000 tonnes of loose timber from Bendorf to Antwerp

Ralf Tietze, General Manager Inland Navigation, intends to “further expand the share of services where we cover the entire supply chain in the coming year.” He also plans to expand services in the transport of waste products as a certified waste management company. “This area will grow as goods such as asphalt and excavated soil are subject to increasingly strict regulations,” reports Tietze.

The division manager expects another positive effect from the new software that will be introduced for his division at the turn of the year. With this, digital links can be established, such as electronic exchange with on-board modules. “This will noticeably simplify our processes in handling,” Tietze is pleased to say.
