On 3 November 2020, (from left) Björn Becker (General Manager Port Logistics Division at HSL), Per Nyström (HSL Managing Directors), Heiko Brückner (HSL Managing Directors), Markus Bangen (Member of Duisburger Hafen AG’s Executive Board) and Matthias Palapys (Managing Director of duisport consult) gathered together for the ground-breaking ceremony. The ceremony marks the start to construction work on the trimodal logistics hub for high-grade steel products. The 9,000 sqm building features an enclosed temperature-controlled warehouse with indoor transshipment capabilities for a block train and for trucks, along with a direct connection to undercover barge handling.

Making way for the new. This principle also applies to the building site for the new hall. The old crane is disassembled on 11 December 2020. The crane is removed with the aid of the parent company Felbermayr which specialises in heavy loads and has the right equipment. The crane’s new place of deployment is duisport packing logistics situated 100 metres to the north.

The walls and parts of the roof construction are completed. To this end, 68 columns in total are assembled to take the façade. The flat roof is held in place by a roof structure consisting of 58 trusses.

September 2021: Moving into the office building

The first milestone has been reached. In September 2021, the new 420 sqm office building, with breakout areas for salaried employees, waiting rooms for truck drivers and offices for twelve more employees, is inaugurated. Adjacent to the office building is a truck forecourt with twelve bays and three special bays for teletrucks as well as several self-handling reception counters for the truck drivers. Display panels alert the drivers as soon as their slot in the steel terminal becomes available. An average of currently 60 trucks a day are loaded and unloaded on the Stahlinsel, with plans to increase this to up to 100 trucks.

CW42/21: Laying of heating system

In the closed heated steel hall, around half a kilometre of tracks have been laid, together with the floor slab, which enables the full indoor handling of block trains. Two half-train tracks, each of 210 metres, lead into the hall. The heating tubes for the resource-conserving system of underfloor heating are installed. A total of 17,000 metres of tubes are laid for the heating system. A good 7,000 sqm of storage space is temperature controlled, with another 2,000 sqm of space for transport which is not heated.

18 January 2022: Crane installed

The brand new crane is assembled in the third calendar week of 2022. This travelling crane can handle even the heaviest goods in the new steel warehouse. With a payload of 40 tonnes, it is ideal for heavy tasks. The crane’s material-friendly coil tong allows that the high-grade steel products will be handled safely.
