The new building complex on the steel island is taking shape. With a scope of 12 million euros, it is the largest investment in the history of Haeger & Schmidt Logistics (HSL). Finalization is scheduled for the end of 2021.
The shell of the heatable steel storage hall, which covers an area of over 9,000 m², has been completed. The building will be able to hold around 60,000 t of high-quality steel products from next year onwards. Almost half a kilometre of rail has been laid in the floor slab for “indoor” block train handling. “Next comes the crane assembly,” reports Björn Becker, Head of the Port Logistics Division. The overhead travelling crane with a load capacity of 40 t will be used for handling in the hall.
The video shows a glimpse of the current construction status on the steel island – sometimes in fast motion, sometimes zoomed in and sometimes from a bird’s eye view. In this way, the new features of the modern steel logistics hub can be experienced even before the new opening.
Another important milestone has already been reached with the move to the new office building for both office staff and industrial personnel at the end of September. This is located directly at the entrance to the terminal, in the immediate vicinity of the truck forecourt. For Becker, the first successes are already visible: “By spatially connecting the truck forecourt and the office building, we have significantly optimized our processes.” Efficiency will increase even further when the self-check-in counter for trucks is installed in the coming weeks. Digitalisation plays a central role for HSL in connection with a forward-looking steel terminal. A new IT system with a high level of detail will provide the basis for logistics activities on site in the future.
This sets the course for significant growth in the area of handling high-grade steel products, which HSL expects to achieve through the construction of the multi-functional hub. Already today, more than 1 million tonnes of steel are handled annually on the steel island.
